Najmah53 is a New York native that proudly reps Brooklyn, New York. She starting writing short poems at the age of 8. By 11, her love of hip hop culture, lead her to start rapping and doing graffiti.
When her family moved to South Carolina, she continued to hone her lyrical skills. By high school she was rapping in talent shows, on the local radio station and in clubs.
At 17, after returning to NY, Najmah53 was offered a deal to be the rap member of an R&B female group and tour Europe. This also meant changing her image to weaves, nails, short skirts and selling sex. She refused to compromise who she was,she did not sell out. She quickly turned down the deal.
Najmah53 eventually decided to give up the headaches of the hip hop industry. After her conversion to Islam she started to write more positive verses, as well as Islamic-driven poetry.
She quickly started getting invited to colleges to perform and tell her story. She was also invited to perform a poem entitled “They Shooting” against the Iraqi War.
For the past few years Najmah53 has been on hiatus to complete a degree in Fashion Design, start her own design business, and raise her children. In 2010, she decided she missed one of her first loves, poetry. She is now performing again and has a mixtape CD of her work slated to come out FEB 2011.
